about

All of this music on this album was made at the request of the dancer/choreographer Christine Brunel and all recordings are live, in which the listener will, at times, even hear Christine moving, taking steps – just as it was intended. Scott Roller and Christine Brunel collaborated on multiple extended projects between 2006 and 2013.
___

On 25/26 October 2013 I made recordings of my cello solo contributions to a dance event with Christine Brunel and two members of her company. The microphone set-up in these live recordings was such, that the cello was directly miked and a stereo mix of the ambiance in the large brick structure of the Machinenhaus, Zeche Carl (in Essen, Germany) was also recorded.

The three FOOTPRINTS tracks result from the superimposition of the two performances of the same improvisation structure with Christine, with little post-production intervention. I always wanted to come back to these recordings to try this, and I like it.

In 2013, Christine requested music for a new choreography to be called FOUR COLUMNS – this time with an element of old music: three Ricercare from Domenico Gabrielli should be interleaved with new music for solo cello. These three movements resulted. They have been treated with some spatial effects to make them sparkle...

Christine Brunel passed away 27 April 2017 and this album is dedicated to her with gratitude and fondness for all of the beauty we created together.
