Yijing Litany - longer version (1/2)

from Yijing Litanies by Scott Roller - speaker anonymous for now

/

about

In 2005, a lovely young Chinese woman orchestral conductor asked to take cello lessons but had no money. I had enjoyed a long and sometimes intense relationship to the ancient Chinese oracle I CHING (German: I Ging), but was always unsure of the pronunciation of the names for the hexagrams.

She paid for her lessons by reading through the list of the 64 signs in front of a good microphone. I collected and used some of the sounds in an installation once – but for the most part i would tinker with the samples sometimes, and always intended to make a recording of various versions and tempi superimposed to produce a musical work, emphasizing the melodious intonations and rich phonology of Chinese.

This version was made 25 April 2023 for this release. By the shorter version, the piece ends when one of the speakers finishes the list. The longer version has one track progressing through the sequence at a much slower tempo while quicker versions repeat up to three times.
