In 2005, a lovely young Chinese woman (who was studying orchestral & choral conducting at the nearby Folkwang Musikhochschule) asked to take cello lessons from me but had no money for it. Having enjoyed a long and sometimes intense relationship to the ancient Chinese oracle I CHING (German: I Ging), since my early youth but was always unsure of the Chinese pronunciation of the names for the hexagrams. We agreed to trade teaching roles: she got cello from me and I got private consulting on the basic Taoist & YiJing terminology (with unlimited use later as samples).

So she paid for her cello lessons by reading through the list of the 64 signs in front of a good microphone and such. I collected and used some of the sounds in a couple of installations but I enjoyed working with the audio to make a recording of various versions and tempi superimposed to produce make various mixes, re-mixes, emphasizing and enjoying the melodious intonations and rich phonology of Chinese.

This version was made 25 April 2023 for this release. By the shorter version, the piece ends when the quickest speakers finishes the list. The longer version has one track progressing through the sequence at a much slower tempo while quicker versions repeat up to three times.

I have an archive with quite a few other variations and maybe I will add more tracks to this album.
